Western New England University appointed Joseph C. Hartman, Ph.D., P.E., as its seventh president. Hartman currently serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
His leadership at UMass Lowell included integrating academic and student affairs, opening the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, developing new degree programs in data science and engineering physics, and launching an Early College program in partnership with the UMass System.
Hartman is an industrial and systems engineer whose research focuses on economic decision analysis and applied optimization. He has published extensively and receives support from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and industry partners. His previous academic roles include serving as a department chair at the University of Florida and holding endowed and visiting positions at Lehigh University, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Dortmund.
