The University of Oxford has appointed Professor Trey Ideker as Director of the Big Data Institute (BDI).
Professor Ideker was selected following an international search led by WittKieffer Managing Partner Natalie Derry, Global Emerging Sciences Practice. He will lead the BDI as it advances its mission to drive transformative, data-enabled research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of disease.
Formerly a Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering and Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, Ideker is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to systems biology, artificial intelligence, and large-scale data integration. His research focuses on building predictive, genome-scale models of human cells and tissues to improve disease diagnosis and treatment.
At UC San Diego, Ideker led and co-led several major data-driven research initiatives, including the Cancer Cell Map Initiative, the ADAPT Center for Precision Oncology, and the NIH Bridge2AI Functional Genomics Program. He has served on scientific advisory boards for the National Institutes of Health, including the National Cancer Institute and the National Human Genome Research Institute.
As Director, Ideker will focus on expanding the application of data science and artificial intelligence to complex health challenges, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, and deepening global research partnerships across biomedical and computational sciences.
WittKieffer’s Natalie Derry led this search.
