The UK’s Hull York Medical School has appointed Professor Matthew Morgan as Deputy Dean. Professor Morgan joins the School from the University of Birmingham, where he held the position of Deputy Programme Director of the MB ChB Programme (Medicine and Surgery) and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Renal Medicine.
“I applied for the role of Deputy Dean because of the School’s reputation as an exciting, supportive and innovative place to study and work,” Professor Morgan said. “After meeting both staff and students during the application process, I felt strongly that Hull York Medical School was a team I wanted to be part of. I am very much looking forward to working with staff, students and our university and NHS partners to ensure Hull York Medical School continues to make a difference to its communities.”
Professor Morgan is a renal physician and academic with a special interest in vasculitis and on appointment, in addition to his Deputy Dean role, will take up the position of Chair in Renal Medicine and Medical Education. An active and experienced researcher, his work has focused on a better understanding of, and therapy for, anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis.
Professor Morgan also brings to Hull York Medical School his extensive experience of promoting diversity and inclusion in healthcare and healthcare education. Through his roles as LGBT+ Staff Network Chair and LGBT+ Student Mentor at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and through membership of equality, diversity and inclusion committees, he led work to better understand student experience of bullying, discrimination and unprofessional behaviour in clinical placements.
“I am delighted that Matt is joining us as Deputy Dean,” said Professor Una Macleod, Dean of the Medical School. “As well as being an experienced clinician and researcher, he brings with him a wealth of experience. My colleagues and I are looking forward to working with him to realise our vision and mission and ensure we continue to make a difference to patients in our region and beyond – through our teaching and research.”
