Nicklaus Children’s has appointed David M. Kalfa, MD, Ph.D., as Chief of the Section of Cardiovascular Surgery and Co-Director of the Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute, effective September 1. He will also serve as professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Surgical Sciences and as a researcher at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
Dr. Kalfa is the first joint hire through the FIU–Nicklaus Children’s affiliation. He brings expertise in complex neonatal cardiac surgery, pediatric valve repair, and minimally invasive techniques. His research focuses on improving outcomes for children with congenital heart defects and includes work in AI-guided surgical planning, regenerative medicine, robotic surgery, and transplant innovation.
He joins Nicklaus Children’s from Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he served as the Florence Irving Associate Professor of Surgery and led pediatric cardiac innovation initiatives at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Kalfa earned his medical degree from the University of Marseille and a Ph.D. in cardiovascular tissue engineering from Paris Descartes University. He completed advanced surgical training in France and Canada. In his new role, he will lead clinical, operational, and quality initiatives for cardiovascular surgery and help shape strategy, research, and education across the Heart Institute.
