Three years ago, WittKieffer's Trust: A Value Imperative explored why trust is fundamental to the pharma industry's ability to deliver on its mission and introduced a framework for understanding how organizations can operationalize trust. In this year's featured article accompanying Pharmaceutical Executive's annual Pharma 50 ranking, we revisit the topic through an evolved lens: how trust has shifted from a strategic asset and differentiator to an operating condition and, increasingly, a baseline requirement for participation in the healthcare ecosystem.
As regulatory expectations intensify, AI reshapes drug development, supply chains face new vulnerabilities, and patients demand greater transparency and accountability, trust increasingly influences innovation, access, stakeholder relationships, and organizational resilience. Drawing on an analysis of the Pharma 50, WittKieffer's Morten Nielsen, Saule Serikova, and Susan Snyder examine how leading pharma companies are embedding trust through governance, leadership, organizational structure, and culture. The article explores how the trust context and organizational response have evolved since 2023 and argues that today's vulnerability lies less in missing structures or insufficient oversight than in fragmentation. It highlights the leadership capabilities, governance mechanisms, and organizational disciplines required to sustain credibility in an environment where trust is tested continuously rather than granted once.
