From her perspective as an HR executive, Amanda Bailey sees her constituency as every employee who sets foot on campus, not just those in academic pursuits or in the leadership suite. “What does their world look like?” she always asks. In this way, she learns the true culture and “taste” of an institution.
Bailey is currently Interim Chief Human Resources Officer at Oregon State University and a nationally recognized thought leader in human resources and organizational culture. In this episode of the Impactful Leaders podcast, she speaks with WittKieffer Principal Sarah Palmer for a dynamic conversation on leadership, resilience, and the evolving workforce in higher education.
With senior HR roles at Boston University, Brown University, and Morehouse College, Amanda brings decades of experience driving cultural transformation and aligning people strategies with institutional priorities. Amanda shares her perspectives on the power of influence and adaptability in times of uncertainty. “CHROs and HR executives have to become adept and really comfortable with being resilient,” she explains. “Influencing others to move forward ideas and strategies that had not been previously thought of—that level of influence is a key marquee attribute of every CHRO.” Her advice underscores the critical role HR leaders play as internal consultants and strategic partners during periods of rapid change.
Conversely, Amanda has been touched by myriad mentors, those senior to her as well as peers and even individuals who report to her. “Mentorship can be all different levels at all times,” she says.
The conversation also explores her vision for the future of work in higher education, including the need for integrated leadership roles and adjacent skill sets. She emphasizes that breaking down silos and accelerating collaboration will be essential for institutions to thrive. Drawing on lessons from other industries, Amanda highlights how adaptability and cross-functional expertise can help higher education meet the demands of a fast-changing environment. This episode is a must-listen for higher education leaders committed to leading with vision and care.
