The University of Rwanda (UR) is the nation’s flagship public university and a critical driver of Rwanda’s social, economic, and intellectual development. Established in 2013 through the merger of 14 higher education institutions, including the former National University of Rwanda, nursing schools and teacher-training colleges, it was created as part of a bold national vision to build a world-class institution capable of advancing Rwanda’s ambitions. Today, the University serves a diverse, 30,000 strong student community across multiple campuses and disciplines, combining a strong commitment to academic excellence across teaching and research with public purpose and impact.
The University is now seeking to appoint a new Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research who will serve as a key member of UR's executive leadership team. Working closely with the Vice Chancellor and colleagues across the institution, the postholder will be responsible for shaping and delivering the University’s vision for academic excellence, research quality and innovation. The Deputy Vice Chancellor will promote a culture of continuous improvement in teaching, learning and scholarship while ensuring UR remains responsive to evolving national priorities and global opportunities.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished academic leader with a strong record of achievement in higher education. They will bring the credibility and strategic acumen to lead curriculum development, advance student success and drive the implementation of an ambitious research agenda aligned with Rwanda's development priorities. The ideal candidate will have experience building productive partnerships with government, industry, funders and academic institutions, supporting research collaboration, innovation and graduate outcomes. They will also demonstrate strong organisational and financial leadership, with the ability to oversee significant academic resources and inspire colleagues across a complex and multi-disciplinary university environment. Above all, the successful candidate will share the University’s commitment to advancing Rwanda’s development agenda, enhancing its global standing, and ensuring that the University of Rwanda continues to serve as a catalyst for knowledge, opportunity and national progress.
