Founded in 1982, the Mycobacteria/Nocardia Clinical Reference Laboratory is a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence specializing in the identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), Nocardia, and other aerobic actinomycetes. One of only a few dedicated laboratories of its kind in the United States, the laboratory serves healthcare providers, hospitals, public health agencies, and reference laboratories nationwide while advancing translational research and innovation in infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
UT Tyler seeks an accomplished physician (MD/DO) or doctoral scientist (PhD) to serve as Associate Director and partner with the Laboratory Director in providing scientific, medical, and operational leadership for this premier high-complexity clinical reference laboratory. The Associate Director will play a key role in overseeing advanced microbiology and molecular diagnostic testing, supporting laboratory quality and regulatory compliance, expanding innovative diagnostic capabilities, and advancing the laboratory's national reputation for excellence.
The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of laboratory medicine, including clinical consultation, quality management, assay development and validation, translational research, and graduate medical education. Working collaboratively with faculty, clinicians, researchers, trainees, and laboratory staff, the Associate Director will help drive strategic growth initiatives, foster new academic and healthcare partnerships, and support the laboratory's continued expansion as a national resource for the diagnosis and management of complex infectious diseases.
The ideal candidate will possess expertise in clinical microbiology and molecular diagnostics as well as eligibility to serve in a leadership role within a high-complexity CLIA laboratory. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills, a commitment to scientific excellence, and a passion for advancing clinical care, research, and education. Experience in mycobacteriology, nocardial diagnostics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, clinical assay development, research, teaching, and laboratory leadership is highly desirable.
