We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Tony Barbato on October 6, 2023. Tony served until recently as a Physician Executive Consultant in WittKieffer’s Academic Medicine and Health Sciences Practice and was an impactful, compassionate leader who counseled those around him with humility, strength, and candor.
Tony had a profound understanding of academic health sciences centers, medical centers, medical schools, and teaching hospitals which fueled his appreciation for the enormous pressure on academic medical centers today to recruit talented clinical, academic, and administrative leaders. He held an impressive array of leadership positions at Loyola University, including president and CEO of Loyola University Health System, vice president for health affairs, provost and chief administrative officer, and executive vice president for the medical center. He also served as executive dean and then dean of Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine from 1984 to 1990. Prior to those administrative roles, Tony was a tenured professor in the medical school’s department of medicine.
A thoughtful partner, mentor and trusted colleague, Tony will be dearly missed.
