SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking the next Chief Executive Officer for SUNY University Hospital at Downstate, a rare opportunity to lead a mission-driven institution at the heart of one of the most dynamic and diverse urban communities in the world, Brooklyn, NY.
The CEO will report directly to Wayne J. Riley, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP who was appointed as the 17th President of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in 2017. Dr. Riley and the CEO will work collaboratively with SUNY leadership, including Chancellor John B. King Jr., the 15th Chancellor of SUNY and the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health and Hospital Affairs. Excitingly, Governor Kathy Hochul has recently pledged a historic $1.1 billion capital investment into SUNY Downstate over the next seven years, marking a transformative moment for healthcare in Central Brooklyn. This investment is part of a comprehensive plan to modernize and revitalize UHD’s infrastructure and services, ensuring it remains a vital safety-net institution for the community.
This CEO will be a community-oriented and involved leader who will embrace living in the region, being among its most visible leaders and representing SUNY Downstate before constituencies across New York. Serving as an effective ambassador of SUNY UHD and becoming part of the fabric of the community, the CEO will need to be effective in actively convening, educating, and leading a variety of partners during a time of transformational change. The CEO must promote a management style that is results-oriented, empowering, and approachable. They will be a truly visible leader and must be an effective communicator with the ability to enhance community relations, culture-building, and the variety of improvements currently underway.
SUNY University Hospital at Downstate seeks an innovative individual who will drive accountability and bring a breadth and depth of successful experience leading operational transformation, culture change, and integrating programs and services that have enhanced community access to high quality healthcare. Of vital importance is identifying a leader with a demonstrated record of accomplishment, such as implementing and operationalizing a strategic plan, as well as building effective, trusting relationships with physicians, employees, and communities. Successful candidates will bring over ten years of leadership experience in a complex hospital or healthcare delivery system; experience within an academic medical center, teaching hospital, and/or safety net hospital setting is preferred. A demonstrated record of success in large scale capital planning and construction also is highly desirable.

Expected Salary Range: $600,000 – $650,000
The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range. Compensation takes into account several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training, and organizational needs. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package and an annual bonus incentive.
