The University of Edinburgh is a world-leading centre of academic excellence committed to making a significant, sustainable and socially responsible contribution to Scotland, the UK and beyond. In the top 25 of the QS World Rankings, in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, the University provides a first-class education for over 49,000 students across its programmes of study – undergraduate and postgraduate, on-site and distance learning.
The School and Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research (INCR) is a newly created institute, combining the university’s world-leading centers for Discovery Brain Science, Cardiovascular Science and Clinical Brain Science. INCR has been established to bring together non-clinical and clinical researchers to address the leading causes of disability, ill-health and mortality. With plans to move into the Edinburgh BioQuarter campus, the INCR houses over 400 research staff, including 190 PIs, combining discovery and clinical research that utilise emerging technologies such as advanced physiology, genetics, imaging and ‘omics, cutting-edge cellular and animal models, cohort-led discovery science, population data, artificial intelligence, and clinical trials. INCR is committed to translating research towards clinical impact both within the University of Edinburgh and through external partnerships with colleagues in academia, industry and healthcare.
The Head of School and Director will be an established, senior research leader, within neuroscience and/or cardiovascular research, with a stellar international reputation, who has the leadership skills to drive INCR’s future strategy in direct alignment with the College and the University of Edinburgh’s research, teaching and knowledge translation ambitions. The successful candidate will manage a collaborative and high-performing team of principal investigators and provide strategic leadership of the Institute to maximize high-quality scientific outputs, including advising on funding strategy and promoting a translational agenda.
Building synergy across INCR and the wider organisation in which it sits, the appointed post-holder will accelerate this research work and provide leadership on teaching. They will be a member of the College senior leadership team and report directly to the Head of College.
