Director of Institute of Genetics and Cancer
University of Edinburgh
Edinburgh - United Kingdom
The University of Edinburgh is a world-leading centre of academic excellence committed to making a significant, sustainable and socially responsible contribution to Scotland, the UK and beyond. In the top 25 of the QS World Rankings, in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, the University provides a first-class education for over 49,000 students across its programmes of study – undergraduate and postgraduate, on-site and distance learning.
The world-leading Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC) brings together around 500 clinicians and multidisciplinary researchers to understand the genetic and biologic mechanisms associated with development and disease, and to decipher the mechanistic insights needed to form the foundations of future medical advances. The Institute is committed to translating research towards clinical impact both within the University of Edinburgh and through external partnerships with colleagues in academia, industry and healthcare. The IGC forms the core of genetics, genomics and cancer research in Edinburgh. This is currently underpinned by major investment by CRUK and MRC/UKRI and collaborative relationships within and beyond the University of Edinburgh.
We seek to appoint a Director with outstanding strategic and leadership skills, who will continue to foster and grow an environment where people thrive and who is well-equipped to lead during a forthcoming period of change. The successful candidate will be motivated to work collaboratively with the talented academic, professional services staff and student body of the College to shape the next phase of the Institute’s development and success.
As a research leader with an international reputation for outstanding research in genetics or cancer, you will drive the Institute’s future strategy in direct alignment with the College and the University of Edinburgh’s research ambitions. You will lead in maintaining the strategic relationship with charities and funding councils and will provide strategic leadership of the Institute to maximise high-quality scientific outputs, including advising on funding strategy and promoting a translational agenda. The Institute has a devolved budget for which you will have overall responsibility. This budget depends upon a strong external funding strategy, which you will be expected to shape together with Principal Investigators.
