Rochester, NY – University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) seeks a distinguished surgical leader with a record of significant contributions in academic medicine to serve as its next Seymour I. Schwartz Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery. This leader will also serve as Surgeon-in-Chief of Strong Memorial Hospital. The Chair will lead the Department in its mission to deliver an unrelenting focus on patients; provide extraordinary surgical care; create new knowledge through innovative research; and develop future surgeons, researchers and leaders across a broad range of specialized expertise.
URMC and UR Medicine (the clinical enterprise) form the centerpiece of the University’s medical research, teaching, patient care, and community missions. URMC has an integrated administrative structure, budget, and strategic plan. As one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, URMC ranks among the top quarter of U.S. medical centers in federal research funding, has an overall budget of approximately $3.8 billion and houses the flagship hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital, an 886-bed quaternary care facility. In addition, URMC includes the School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and the Wilmot Cancer Center.
Through leading-edge research, clinical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to patient well-being, the Department of Surgery plays a pivotal role in the future of health care delivery across the region. The Department consists of over 100 distinguished faculty members in 11 Divisions and over 400 staff members. The Department is renowned for its strong commitment to research, with over $9.6 million in NIH funding and total sponsored research of $11.2 million. In addition, the Department of Surgery currently hosts seven ACGME-accredited residency/fellowship programs.
The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized leader and scholar in surgery, with a proven commitment to research, clinical care, medical education and training, and community engagement. The Chair will have the knowledge and ability to effectively inspire, mentor, and lead physicians, researchers, and educators. The successful candidate will demonstrate a keen understanding of and track record in sponsored research and aim to mentor and grow faculty to expand the research portfolio of the Department. Candidates must have the leadership experience required to oversee a complex, multi-site, and busy clinical department across URMC. An M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required, as well as current board certification in a field of surgery within the department’s scope and warrant qualification for appointment to Professor at the University of Rochester.

The pay range for this position is $900,000 – $1,100,000. The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience, and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
