Executive Director of Development for the WVU Cancer Institute
West Virginia University Foundation
Morgantown, WV - United States
The West Virginia University Foundation is seeking a skilled and highly motivated development professional to assist in its endeavors, taking on the role of Executive Director of Development for the WVU Cancer Institute. This position is perfectly suited for a forward-looking, imaginative, and dynamic fundraiser who is keen on guiding a growing team as they commence a significant building campaign.
The WVU Cancer Institute represents a beacon of hope, where leading doctors and researchers in the state unite to offer compassionate, top-tier care for a brighter future. Its director, Hannah Hazard-Jenkins, MD, is a widely esteemed figure recognized for her expertise in breast cancer treatment, research, and education. Under her direction, the WVU Cancer Institute has expanded its reach, aiding more patients than ever through regional facilities offering care closer to home and a thorough mobile screening initiative emphasizing early detection. The Institute’s mobile lung cancer screening unit, LUCAS, was the first in the nation. Efforts are underway to collaborate with partners nationwide and internationally who are keen on emulating this model. LUCAS builds on the pioneering efforts of Bonnie’s Bus, a mobile mammography unit that has conducted over 30,000 mammograms and identified more than 170 breast cancer cases in the past 15 years.
Recognizing the necessity to mitigate further cancer’s impact in West Virginia, the WVU Health System is vigorously investing in cancer treatment, research, and education to secure the state’s first National Cancer Institute designation. Recently, the state allocated $50 million to support this ambitious objective, with the next goal being constructing a new cancer center.
The WVU Foundation houses a team of collaborative professionals dedicated to maximizing charitable support for the University, its faculty, and students, as well as for WVU Medicine and its patients. WVU is committed to promoting education, healthcare, prosperity, and purpose as part of its land-grant mission. Both the WVU Cancer Institute and the WVU Foundation are united in their resolve to significantly impact the lives of West Virginians. With the Mountain State leading the nation in cancer mortality, fundraising efforts to enhance cancer care, research, and outreach are vital for the health and well-being of the state’s 1.8 million residents.
The broader WVU Medicine health system, encompassing 24 hospitals across four states – West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio – maintains a family-like atmosphere despite its expansion. Employees across the three entities – the WVU Cancer Institute, WVU Medicine, and the WVU Foundation – are collectively committed to providing the highest quality of care for West Virginians, aiding them in leading healthier lives.
Located in Morgantown, the flagship site of the WVU Cancer Institute is nestled in a growing community that retains a small-town ambiance while being close to major urban centers. Morgantown houses around 30,000 permanent residents and approximately 24,000 WVU students during the academic year. Major cities such as Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C., are within a manageable driving distance. Moreover, West Virginia boasts unparalleled natural beauty, offering numerous opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, whitewater rafting, camping, and sightseeing, all within the state’s backyard.
This ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of direct fundraising experience with a preference for previous work in an academic medical center or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Healthcare philanthropy experience is preferred, but those with diverse fundraising leadership backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
