Hershey, PA – Penn State College of Medicine (PSCOM) and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (MSHMC) based in Hershey, Pennsylvania seek an accomplished and collaborative physician leader with a record of significant contributions in academic medicine to serve as the next Chair of Medicine.
For over 50 years, PSCOM and MSHMC have served as central Pennsylvania’s only university medical school and medical center. Together, they have played a prominent role in meeting the region’s needs for tertiary and quaternary care and have served as one of the region’s largest employers and economic drivers. Amidst a rapidly changing health care landscape, PSH has evolved into a comprehensive university health system which includes primary, specialty, and acute care locations across the region. Among its core goals is to ensure patients receive high quality, accessible, cost-effective care, close to where they live.
The PSCOM Department of Medicine aims to excel in patient care, research, education, and community outreach. These missions are supported by 12 divisions, 300 faculty, 55 advanced practice providers, 65 fellows, 80 residents, and 100 staff who reach over 120,000 patients annually. Through leading-edge research, clinical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to patient well-being, the department plays a vital role in shaping the future of health care. Additionally, the department serves as a hub for medical education, nurturing the growth and development of future health care professionals.
Leading the Department of Medicine, the next Chair will be a nationally recognized physician leader and scholar in medicine, with a proven commitment to research, clinical care, medical education and training, and community engagement. They will have the knowledge and ability to effectively inspire, mentor, and lead physicians, researchers, and educators while embracing the values of diversity and belonging, quality, and financial sustainability in concert with assuring the wellness of faculty, staff and trainees.
Along with bringing a strong track record of leadership and mentorship of diverse faculty at all stages of career development, the successful candidate also will demonstrate understanding of sponsored research and aim to expand the research portfolio of the department. Candidates must have the leadership experience required to oversee a complex, multi-site, and busy clinical department across Penn State Health. The successful candidate will have integrity, intellect, the ability to work collaboratively with numerous stakeholders, a core value of inclusive and equitable leadership, and a vision of how a modern academic department of medicine thrives in the current health care landscape. Candidates must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree, current board certification in a field of internal medicine within the department’s scope, and warrant qualification for appointment to Professor at PSCOM.
