University of Virginia Health System (UVA Health) seeks an experienced, collaborative, and proactive physician leader to serve as its inaugural System Medical Director, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and Utilization Management (UM). This is an exciting opportunity to lead the CDI and UM functions of one of the nation’s premier academic health systems widely recognized for advancing academics, training, education, clinical care, and research.

Reporting to the Chief Clinical Officer, the System Medical Director, CDI/UM is a key member of UVA Health’s leadership team and is charged with meeting the organization’s goals and objectives for facilitating complete and accurate clinical documentation in the medical record to support the diagnoses, treatment, medical necessity, severity of illness, and risk of mortality. This substantiates accurate code and DRG assignment as well as assuring the effective and efficient utilization of health care services.
The System Medical Director, CDI/UM serves UVA through teaching, consulting, and advising the medical staff, CDI, care management, utilization review, coding departments, and health system leadership teams. The System Medical Director, CDI/UM shall develop expertise on matters regarding compliance with governmental and private payer regulations and appropriate physician coding and documentation requirements, as well as matters regarding physician practice patterns, over and under-utilization of resources, medical necessity, levels of care, care progression, and appeals and denials management.
The successful candidate will be a board-certified physician (MD/DO), ideally with an academic physician advisory background. Candidates should be knowledgeable of all elements of CDI/UM in relationship to healthcare delivery, including compliance, revenue cycle, and health information management. The successful candidate will be a transparent and collaborative leader comfortable spearheading and supporting change in a complex environment.
