Rochester, NY – University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) seeks an accomplished, collaborative and transformative physician leader with a substantial record of clinical, research, education, and administrative accomplishments as its next Denham S. Ward, MD, PhD Endowed Professor and Chair, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. The Chair will lead through multidisciplinary teams with a vision for advancing anesthesia and perioperative services throughout a regional network and enhancing the academic mission.
URMC and UR Medicine (the clinical enterprise) form the centerpiece of the University’s medical research, teaching, patient care, and community missions. URMC has an integrated administrative structure, budget, and strategic plan. As one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, URMC ranks among the top quarter of U.S. medical centers in federal research funding, has an overall budget of approximately $3.8 billion and houses the flagship hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital, an 886-bed quaternary care facility. In addition, URMC includes the School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and the Wilmot Cancer Center.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is a leading academic department dedicated to excellence in clinical service, research, and education. The Department consists of 119 distinguished faculty members, 62 certified registered nurse anesthetists and 19 nurse practitioners. These team members provide more than 66,000 anesthetic encounters annually, practicing across the 70 ORs, 4 ICUs and multiple delivery rooms and procedure rooms at URMC and affiliated locations. The Department is well-regarded for its strong commitment to research and education, with over $2.2 million in NIH funding, and hosting a robust residency program and four fellowships.
The successful candidate will be a recognized leader in anesthesiology who brings a strong track record of recruiting, retaining, and mentoring faculty at all stages of career development. This leader will have a demonstrated understanding of clinical program growth within complex academic health systems and a desire to advance the research and educational programs in the Department. They will bring integrity, intellect, and the ability to collaborate with numerous key constituents while leading the vision for a contemporary academic department of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine.

The pay range for this position is $632,000 – $737,000. The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience, and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
