Nebraska Medicine (NM) in Omaha, Nebraska seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as its next Vice President, Chief Information Officer (VP/CIO). This role presents an exciting opportunity to advance broad and sustained organizational change in a large, complex and highly respected academic health care institution located in a growing tech hub of the Midwest.
NM is a $3 billion academic and community-based health system with over 10,000 colleagues and physicians. In addition to the 690-bed academic medical center and a 91-bed community hospital, the organization includes an integrated faculty practice plan of more than 1,400 affiliated physicians and a large ambulatory care platform. NM enjoys strong philanthropic support, boasts top decile safety outcomes and is in the early stages of a $2.19 billion campus renovation.
Reporting directly to the Chief Transformation and Digital Officer (CTDO), the VP/CIO will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing NM’s technology vision. This leader will ensure that the IT strategy is fully aligned with the organization’s broader mission, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation. By partnering closely with academic and clinical stakeholders, the VP/CIO will strengthen patient care and advance strategic objectives across the health system.
In collaboration with the CTDO, the VP/CIO will operationalize the transformation vision, integrating information technology, data, and enterprise strategy into a unified approach. This includes building and sustaining a modern technology infrastructure that supports robust networking, cybersecurity, and data management practices essential for a leading academic medical center. In addition, the VP/CIO will lead in developing the cloud migration strategy and will have a key role in supporting Project Health, a $2.19 billion expansion on UNMC’s Omaha campus, which will connect education, research and patient care in one place and support the health system’s expansion and new construction including the building of the academic hospital of the future. Developed in collaboration with the City of Omaha, and the State of Nebraska, Project Health stands as a bold and forward-thinking endeavor by UNMC and Nebraska Medicine to redefine healthcare delivery, education, and innovation for generations to come. It will reshape Nebraska Medicine’s clinical learning environment and enhance the health systems commitment to easy access to world class health care for the communities it serves across the state and beyond. This will be a pivotal time for a new CIO at Nebraska Medicine to help architect how the future of how healthcare will be delivered within a modern health ecosystem coupled with innovative and the most forward-thinking technologies.
The VP/CIO will be an excellent communicator, a collaborative team player, and a mentor who can develop and elevate the team. The VP/CIO will possess experience with the Epic EHR and a proven track record of success as a technology leader within a health system, ideally in the context of an academic medical center. Experience with leading large-scale technology transformations encompassing infrastructure modernization and building cohesive, high-performing teams and fostering alignment among diverse stakeholders is desired. Additionally, expertise in operationalizing vision and strategy, driving innovation, and ensuring that strategic objectives translate into measurable outcomes will be a key component of the role.
