Stony Brook, NY – The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University seeks a dynamic, passionate, and collaborative physician leader to serve as its next Division Chief of Hematology and Oncology (Chief) in the Department of Medicine. The Chief will align the division’s goals with the School of Medicine and the Stony Brook Cancer Center’s strategic plans and play a key role in fostering a unified and forward-looking approach to clinical, academic, and research excellence. This individual will work to develop an innovative strategic vision for the Division, ensuring it remains at the forefront of basic science, translational and clinical research, education, and cutting-edge clinical care. The Chief will serve as a key contributor to the systematic growth of the cancer program across the region through care delivery, research, and education.
The Renaissance School of Medicine is a public medical school and part of Stony Brook University, a designated flagship institution of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The School of Medicine educates 500+ medical students, 750+ residents and fellows with 68 ACGME accredited residencies and fellowships in a broad range of specialties. The School of Medicine is one of five health sciences schools within the overarching Stony Brook Medicine organization, which is also home to 628-bed Stony Brook University Hospital and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, and multiple outpatient care sites.
The Department of Medicine is home to over 370 faculty, nine divisions, and nearly $6.5 million in NIH funding. The Division of Hematology and Oncology is comprised of 24 faculty and includes Sections of Medical Oncology & Hematology and of Palliative Care. The Division members work across the clinical, research, and education aligning their work to serve the mission and goals of the cancer program and the institution.
Stony Brook Cancer Center (SBCC) is Suffolk County’s cancer care leader. With more than 3,000 new patients and 70,000 outpatient visits annually, the Cancer Center includes 13 integrated care teams to offer the region leading edge, specialized care. The cancer program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The SBCC mission is to reduce the suffering from cancer by providing world-class multidisciplinary care close to home, conducting innovative research, educating patients and healthcare professionals, and partnering with the community to reach underserved populations. The Cancer Center includes over 450 FTEs, and the current NIH funding of SBCC members exceeds $30 million.
The successful candidate will be a leader with a demonstrated ability to set a vision, advance a collaborative culture and effectively inspire, manage, mentor, and develop a team of medical oncologists and advanced practitioners. They will have intimate knowledge of clinical practice, quality, and patient safety while supporting the growth of the academic mission. The Chief will earn the respect of colleagues through professional achievement, clinical practice, scholarly activity, and servant leadership. An MD/DO degree is required, as is completion of postgraduate medical education in an ACGME-approved residency and fellowship program with current Board certification in hematology and/or medical oncology. Vital to the Chief’s success is the ability to develop strong relationships and work well with multiple constituents across clinical services, regional referral sources, organizational partners, and system leadership to deliver on Stony Brook University’s vision for Hematology and Medical Oncology care.
