St. Louis, MO – Mid-America Transplant seeks a collaborative, business-oriented physician leader to serve in the newly created role of Chief Medical Officer, External Affairs. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer and serving as one of two senior physician leaders in the organization, this position will be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team taking one of the industry-leading Organ Procurement Organizations into its next phase of growth and innovation. Mid-America Transplant is the not-for-profit regional Organ and Tissue Procurement Organization for 4.7 million people living within a federally assigned territory inclusive of 84 counties located within Eastern Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Northeast Arkansas. Mid-America Transplant helps donor families through moments of grief and loss, supports transplant patients, and facilitates safe, reliable donations for transplant. Together with its partners—124 hospitals, four transplant centers, and several nonhospital referral institutions—Mid-America Transplant is working toward a brighter future where organs and tissues are always available to those in need. In 2023, Mid-America Transplant worked with 299 organ donors resulting in 801 lifesaving organs and an additional 2,697 tissue donors improving the quality of life for over 200,000 people.
The Chief Medical Officer, External Affairs (CMOEA) will act as the face of physician leadership for Mid-America Transplant. The CMOEA will be the main touchpoint for the partner organizations in Mid-America Transplant’s network, developing and enhancing relationships with key stakeholders in support of strategic objectives. The CMOEA will lead quality for the organization to ensure Mid-America Transplant continually expands its impact and maintains its industry-leading place in the market. This person will also oversee laboratory services for Mid-America Transplant, a growing area for the organization.
The CMOEA will be a highly collaborative, adaptive, collegial physician leader who can quickly develop healthy, fruitful relationships inside and outside of their own institution. Mid-America Transplant seeks candidates who have worked clinically for at least five years in critical care medicine or a related specialty that has given them in-depth knowledge of how to manage ventilated patients. Successful candidates will display a track record of experience enabling a strong understanding of hospital policies and procedures, quality metrics, and change leadership. The CMOEA will be compassionate and driven by an inherent desire for excellence. Given the organization’s mission and focus, political savvy and sensitivity is a must. Process excellence, stewardship, and innovation are core organizational commitments, and the successful candidate will bring a relentless, round-the-clock drive to secure every organ, every time.
Candidates must have an M.D. or D.O. degree and current board certification in a related specialty. Strong business acumen is required, and an M.B.A. or M.H.A. degree is a plus.
