Assistant Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Admissions
Dartmouth College
Hanover, NH - United States
Dartmouth College, home to a celebrated liberal arts curriculum and pioneering professional schools, seeks an Assistant Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Admissions (AVP/Dean).
Founded in 1769, Dartmouth’s mission “to educate the most promising students and prepare them for a lifetime of learning and of responsible leadership, through a faculty dedicated to teaching and the creation of knowledge” resonates more clearly now than ever. One of the world’s greatest academic institutions, Dartmouth’s undergraduate and graduate programs are distinguished by academic excellence, personal attention from top faculty who are passionate about teaching, opportunities to participate in research, and a vibrant and inclusive learning community. Over 40 departments and programs constitute Dartmouth’s liberal arts core, which promotes critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration among its students. Widely recognized for the extraordinary quality of its undergraduate teaching, Dartmouth offers a liberal arts education for the 21st century: education in and beyond the classroom plus the preparation to go out and change the world. Sian Leah Beilock became Dartmouth’s 19th President on June 12, 2023. She is the first woman to serve as President of Dartmouth. Also in 2023, the Call to Lead, Dartmouth’s record-breaking fundraising campaign, ended after raising nearly $3.8 billion.
Dartmouth’s undergraduate admissions and financial aid outcomes continue to be remarkably strong. The undergraduate Class of 2028 drew 31,656 applicants – the College’s fourth record pool in the last six years, and a 10% increase from last year’s record high. The College is committed to expanding educational opportunity through a significant investment in need-based financial aid and an ambitious set of new aid policies. Students offered admission for this coming fall will be in the first incoming class eligible for a new middle-income affordability initiative that enabled Dartmouth to nearly double its current annual income threshold for a “zero parent contribution,” from $65,000 to $125,000 for families of AB undergraduates with typical assets. That new threshold is the most generous of any college or university in the nation.
Reporting to the Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid with a dotted line report to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, the new AVP/Dean will lead and advance the College’s efforts to enroll students who can enhance and contribute to the Hanover community, working closely with campus leaders to envision the best possible enrollment future. During this extraordinary time in its long history, Dartmouth is energized to advance a commitment to recruit and enroll an exceptional undergraduate student body drawn from around the world. As such, the AVP/Dean will support an effort that is inventive, data-driven, ambitious, and sophisticated. The AVP/Dean will lead the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and contribute to the admissions strategy and practice that annually recruits and yields a talented and diverse class of students from many social, cultural, and economic backgrounds to the College. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions manages marketing to and recruitment of prospective undergraduate students as well as the admissions process for first year and transfer students.
The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced and rapidly changing external environment with a record of success in complex, decentralized organizations where collaboration and coalition-building are critical to success. The AVP/Dean will be a data-informed thought partner to the Vice President with a sophisticated and strategic understanding of national and international trends and markets, especially within a mission-driven, highly selective admissions setting.
