In a way, healthcare is experiencing post-traumatic stress from the COVID pandemic, believes Monique Butler, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer of HCA Healthcare North Florida Division. The industry must now pay more attention to building back the strength and resilience of nurses, physicians and other essential workers, as well as of leaders themselves. In this conversation with WittKieffer’s Linda Komnick, managing partner and leader of our Physician Integration & Leadership practice, Dr. Butler describes efforts she and HCA have taken to instill resilience throughout the workforce. Her advice to leaders and working professionals in general, “Take care of yourself first.” The conversation also explores Dr. Butler’s transition from full-time practitioner to full-time executive and the rewards that has brought to her career.

Dr. Monique Butler, MD, MBA
In January 2021, Dr. Monique Butler, MD, MBA was named Chief Medical Officer of HCA Healthcare North Florida Division. In this role, Dr. Butler is responsible for clinical operations and care excellence of 15 hospitals to ensure that every patient and every family receives the highest level of care possible.
Dr. Butler most recently served as Chief Medical Officer for HCA Healthcare Continental Division’s Swedish Medical Center, a part of HCA’s HealthONE, where she promoted a mission-driven approach to patient care with a team of 2,000 colleagues, 500 volunteers and more than 1,400 physicians. Dr. Butler’s multi-system hospital experience, extensive involvement creating hospital operational and quality improvements, and commitment to patient safety helped her achieve tremendous success in her career.
During her time at Swedish, she implemented successful team initiatives to improve care for the more than 200,000 patients served in the south metro Denver area. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Butler has driven numerous quality and growth initiatives. Under her leadership, Swedish accomplished a top percentile rank (throughout the HCA Enterprise) for physician engagement and satisfaction through 3 key drivers for growth-communication, inclusion in major decisions and visibility of senior leadership. With her commitment and passion to patient safety and eliminating harm in the hospital setting, the team was able to reduce hospital acquired infection rates by greater than 50% and produce a reduction in sepsis and overall mortality rates by 25%.
Additionally, she created a high reliability organization and implemented a Just Culture, where colleagues feel empowered to speak up and advocate for patient safety. Additionally, Swedish Medical Center has earned many quality accolades, including consistent ‘A’ safety grades from the Leapfrog Group, multiple awards from Healthgrades, and recognition as an IBM/Watson Health Top medical center in the nation. Dr. Butler has been instrumental in guiding Swedish Medical Center’s efforts to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, colleagues and physicians during this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to her role as Chief Medical Officer of Swedish, Dr. Butler served as Chief Operating Officer at Children’s Hospital of Michigan/Detroit Medical Center. Previously she held positions as the Chief Medical Officer at Detroit Receiving Hospital and Sinai-Grace Hospital.
A recognized leader in her community, Dr. Butler was most recently chosen as a Women Who Soar honoree by the Northwest Douglas County Chamber, an award given to women who inspire others to be better leaders and blaze the path for future generations. She was voted A Woman of Excellence in STEM careers in Michigan, recognized as one of Michigan Chronicle’s 40 under 40, and was identified in Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the 50 great African American leaders in healthcare to know in the nation. She is currently on the board of the City Year of Denver, Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital Foundation, Doctor’s Care and GlobalmindED.
A board-certified internist, Dr. Butler graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and received her medical training at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training at the Detroit Medical Center where she was chief medical resident of internal medicine, and president of the resident council at Sinai-Grace Hospital. Dr. Butler also completed a Master of Business Administration from the University of Tennessee Physician Executive MBA program and holds a clinical assistant professorship appointment at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.
Linda J. Komnick is a recognized expert in the recruitment of physician executives. She also works with public and private corporations across industries in the recruitment of chief medical officers and wellness officers. In supporting these organizations, Linda serves as a strategic advisor to help clients understand their unique qualities and position themselves to recruit and retain physician leaders who will drive operational improvements, cost savings and competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Prior to joining WittKieffer, Linda worked as an independent consultant and physician recruitment expert. She also acted in key leadership roles at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, including the positions of director of ambulatory care and as associate vice president of administration.
