Get in TouchRichard Nesto, M.D., is a leading cardiologist, researcher, scholar and healthcare administrator who serves in the capacity of physician executive consultant for WittKieffer’s Academic
Medicine and Health Sciences Practice. Dr. Nesto lends his expertise and leadership insight to the recruitment of senior academic medical center and academic health system executives ranging from CEOs and chief medical officers to deans and department chairs.
Previously, Dr. Nesto served as chief medical officer for Beth Israel Lahey Health, where he led strategic medical affairs and set the system agenda for quality and safety, patient experience and clinical integration. He also oversaw development of provider-to-provider relationships and patient access across the system. Dr. Nesto had been interim CEO of Lahey Health, playing an integral role in the formation of the system, and was also CMO of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. Earlier in his Lahey tenure, he served as chair of cardiovascular medicine and chair of medicine. Dr. Nesto began his career in cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital followed by staff and leadership positions as an interventional cardiologist at New England Deaconess Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and Lahey Clinic over a 35-year period.
A professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Nesto is internationally known for his clinical and research advancements in the treatment of heart disease in patients with diabetes mellitus and served as a lead investigator in numerous international landmark clinical trials. He is an accomplished scholar with an h-index of 63 and with more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and abstracts.
Dr. Nesto received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and his undergraduate degree from Harvard College. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester, and clinical and research fellowships in cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
