Professor of Public Policy
African School of Governance
Kigali - Rwanda
The African School of Governance (ASG) is a newly established, independent, pan-African graduate professional school situated in Kigali, Rwanda, seeking to offer a unique blend of world-class public policy and leadership education, research, and policy engagement that embraces its distinctive African identity.
Established in 2024, ASG was born from the vision of African leaders seeking to cultivate the next generation of scholars, professionals and leaders. The school aims to equip individuals with the necessary skills and mindset to tackle the major governance challenges facing Africa and the world in the 21st century and beyond.
ASG seeks a Professor of Public Policy to join the school who will be an academic with an emerging global reputation for excellence in research, teaching and public engagement in public policy and public administration in Africa, or from other developing countries. A strong understanding of comparative civil service and bureaucracy, and its contemporary weakness in delivering effective public policy in Africa, and how to implement civil / public service reform in the continent with success, is critical. Experience at the nexus of academia and industry / policy and a theoretical, empirical and practical understanding of policymaking and implementation in the African context would be an added advantage.
The successful candidate will undertake teaching, research and administration at ASG. Teaching duties will be focused on the Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) and supervision of MPA graduate students during their thesis research or capstone projects. Candidates should be at the professorial level with a track record of international publications in highly ranked, peer-reviewed academic and policy journals, commensurate with the candidate’s career stage. A PhD in Public Policy, Public Administration or a closely related field is preferred.
Individuals who are able to work fluidly in a start-up environment will excel in this position.
The position would require full, on campus presence in Kigali, Rwanda.
ASG values diversity and inclusion and is committed to the principles of equality, fairness, inclusivity and transparency in its recruitment processes. Career breaks or atypical career paths will be considered, and only personal merit and job-related criteria will determine selection.
