The Wellcome Sanger Institute is seeking an outstanding leader for the post of Chief Operating Officer (COO).
The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a world-renowned genomics research centre, located at the Wellcome Genome Campus – considered one of the largest single-site communities of expertise in Genomes and BioData globally. The Institute undertakes large-scale research that forms the foundations of knowledge in biology and medicine, and its data, results, tools and technologies advance science worldwide. Our mission is to apply and explore genomic technologies to advance global understanding of biology and improve health.
The Institute is founded on the belief that comprehensive molecular characterisation of life will transform our understanding of biology and biomedicine. This ‘genomics revolution’ can only be achieved by generating foundational large-scale datasets that integrate the principal molecules of life (DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites etc.), allied to advanced computational analyses. Sanger is an innovative, unconventional research institute delivering science at a scale that is both distinctive and uniquely impactful, and propels a global biomedical research community with data, insights, tools and talent. As the Institute enters its fourth decade, we stand on the brink of both groundbreaking discoveries and tangible societal benefits. Sanger’s science spans both fundamental discoveries and translational research focused on achieving public benefits.
The Chief Operating Officer is a vital member of the executive leadership team, reporting directly to the Director of the Institute. You will be responsible for developing and implementing the operational strategic plan of the Institute, adapting best practice to support the unique Sanger environment. This role holds wide ranging responsibilities, providing oversight and leadership to established departments and operating units within the Institute.
You will possess exceptional transformational leadership skills, capable of inspiring, motivating, and guiding teams through complex, organisation-wide changes while maintaining a focus on mission-critical objectives.
