El Paso, TX – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) seeks an inspirational and values-driven leader to serve as its next Dean of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM). The ideal candidate will be a collaborative academic physician who will work closely with TTUHSC El Paso’s President, Richard Lange, M.D., M.B.A., department chairs, faculty, staff, graduate medical trainees, students, alumni, affiliated clinical entities, and leadership across PLFSOM and TTUHSC El Paso.
The PLFSOM stands out for its innovative curriculum, focusing on a patient-centered approach and integrating state-of-the-art medical technologies. The school is recognized for fostering a collaborative and interdisciplinary learning environment. It unites faculty, learners, and healthcare professionals to promote teamwork and provide holistic patient care. The integration of research opportunities within the curriculum allows students to engage in scientific inquiry and contribute to advancements in medical knowledge.
In addition to its commitment to education and research, the PLFSOM actively participates in community outreach and healthcare initiatives. The school’s emphasis on cultural competency and understanding the unique healthcare challenges faced by border communities, reflects its dedication to making a positive impact on public health. As a significant contributor to the healthcare landscape, the school is actively molding the next generation of physicians and healthcare leaders. Reporting to the president, the dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the school and defines the vision for ongoing development of the institution. This encompasses empowering chairs, other leaders, faculty, staff, and learners to advance the educational programs, strategically expand the research portfolio across all domains (basic, translational, clinical, and population health), ensure primary and subspecialty patient care, actively engage with the community, and sustains investment in the university’s values-based culture. The dean also has accountability for overseeing the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso practice group.
The ideal candidate for the position of new dean should be an accomplished leader with a robust national standing in academic medicine, along with excellent communication and relationship-building skills. The essential qualifications include financial acumen, well-honed management skills, capacity to engage donors, and a proven track record in recruiting high-caliber faculty and non-faculty leaders. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, innovative research, sound fiscal management, and the highest levels of personal integrity and ethical standards. Qualified candidates must have an M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or an equivalent medical degree, board certification in the candidate’s specialty/discipline by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, leadership experience at the level of the Department Chair, Vice Chair, Division Chief, Associate Dean or other comparable experience, established national reputation in academic medicine, and academic credentials that would warrant appointment as a full professor.
