John Muir Health (JMH) seeks a highly accomplished financial executive to serve as its next Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). JMH is a $2.4 billion healthcare enterprise consisting of multiple hospitals and ambulatory sites covering a wide continuum of care as well as multiple physician partners in a complex, mixed model medical staff. In recent years, JMH has also developed formal relationships with various well-recognized and highly successful healthcare organizations. The COO will be joining this high-quality, nationally recognized health system at an exciting time as it continues to carry on its rich tradition and history while continuing to position JMH for future growth and service to its many diverse communities.
Reporting directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer of John Muir Health, Mike Thomas, the COO will direct all clinical and operational activities across the care continuum for the high-performing health system. The COO is responsible for the supporting the strategic initiatives of the system and the broader executive team and Board of Directors. The COO is responsible for the effective integration and efficient operations for acute care, ambulatory services, clinical service lines, and system facilities. John Muir Health will continue its journey as a care destination for those in the Bay Area and the COO will not only drive quality metrics, but also deliver cost-effective operational results for the system in a dynamic, competitive local market. The COO will enhance the culture of greater discipline and accountability for a sustainable level of improved performance and be a key partner to each member of the executive leadership team. They will enable the system to effectively pursue strategic growth opportunities through strong operational performance across the clinical enterprise.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned operational leader with considerable experience and a proven track record of leading operational success in a complex, multisite healthcare organization in a competitive market. The COO will be a forward-thinking leader who also has deep experience with daily operational management of a large enterprise. They will need to be a natural collaborator with demonstrated strong relationships with clinical and executive teams driven to achieve results with pace and decisiveness. The COO must be emotionally intelligent and comfortable engaging at all levels of the organization to include the Board of Directors. They will work in a collaborative and proactive manner with the CEO and other members of the executive team to improve and sustain operational performance and attain strategic goals and objectives.
The COO must be a willing change agent with a deep history of driving improved operational, clinical, and financial performance. They will have a balanced approach to leadership between strategy and operations to meet and exceed the short- and long-term strategic goals of John Muir Health. The COO will be a gifted communicator, joining a genuine and visible executive leadership team with a strong mission orientation.
