The faculty rank is Professor Without Tenure or Associate Professor Without Tenure levels. This is an exceptional opportunity for a faculty research leader with operational experience to join a world-renowned medical school and academic health system to make a significant impact by leading the future direction of IT in support of clinical care, education and research. Guided by a compelling mission focused on improving the health of the public, UW Medicine, is a vibrant and progressive organization that includes one of the top academic medical centers and medical schools and biomedical research programs in the country (top public institution in the country in terms of federal funding).
Reporting to the Chair of BIME for scholarship and education with a dual report to the UW Medicine Chief Information Officer for operational work, the CRIO will work with current faculty and students in growing both the scholarship, service and practice aspects of the clinical and translational research informatics program. The research and practice activities will build on existing clinical and translational research informatics scholarship and practice in the context of the University of Washington CTSA (the Institute of Translational Health Sciences, ITHS), the clinical computing operations group (UW Medicine Information Technology Services, UWM ITS), the Institute for Medical Data Science, and the ongoing research and educational programs in the BIME department.
The CRIO role is responsible for developing, evolving, and overseeing an organization-wide UW Medicine and CTSA research IT strategy. The CRIO role provides strategic and tactical leadership and oversees the Director of Research IT (RIT) and the members of the UWM ITS RIT team. Research IT supports a dynamic and expanding portfolio, managing 30-40 grants and approximately 100 active projects at any given time. The CRIO also serves as the Director of the Biomedical Informatics Core for the UW CTSA (ITHS), which is a subset of the core services offered by the RIT team. The CRIO role includes oversight of the budget and personnel in the RIT group and the ITHS BMI Core. The ITHS partners with clinics and universities in the WA, WY, AK, MT, ID (WWAMI) area as an extension of the UW Medical School WWAMI partnership whereby UW serves as the WWAMI medical school with branch campuses in each state.
The opportunity includes a leadership role in the Institute for Medical Data Sciences (IMDS), which will focus on leading the development of a 2nd generation strategic plan for the IMDS including fundraising while maintaining and expanding current IMDS activities. The IMDS role will work with the IMDS sponsors, executive committee and steering committee on development of the strategic plan. The IMDS is housed in BIME administratively and is a partnership between the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health (Biostatistics and Health Metric Sciences), and the College of Engineering (including the Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering).
The successful candidate will be an experienced leader who will provide strategic leadership and operational excellence for research information services working in a complex academic health system.
