The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) – a top-ranked creative and performing arts conservatory in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and America’s first public arts conservatory – seeks a collaborative student health clinician to serve as its Medical Director.
UNCSA trains talented students from high school to graduate school for professional careers in the performing, visual, and film and television arts. Students are admitted by audition or interview to the schools of: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. The Division of Student Affairs serves the physical, social, and emotional needs of a highly diverse student body, ages 13+, in the areas of health, wellness, counseling, transportation, orientation, residence life/housing, activities, and student development.
Within the Division of Student Affairs, the Wellness Center has healthcare professionals, counselors, athletic trainers and physical therapists. The Center offers a comprehensive array of services designed to nurture every aspect of our students well-being-from physical health to mental resilience. Their dedicated team of healthcare professionals, counselors, dietitians, psychiatrists, and athletic trainers is committed to providing personalized care and guidance to help students thrive throughout their academic journey at UNCSA and beyond.
Reporting to the Vice Provost of Student Affairs, Laurel Donley, the Medical Director ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare to students, promoting their physical, mental and emotional well-being. They serve as the medical officer within the Wellness Center, providing consultation to providers on complex medical cases in addition to providing direct primary care services to UNCSA students. They will participate actively in various committee meetings, including divisional team meetings, student groups, and academic and other campus partners’ planning sessions, as appropriate. The Medical Director serves on and sometimes leads various committees that pertain to the delivery of quality health care and the promotion of health and wellness within the university community. The Medical Director will be aware of social factors influencing health and actively maintains a varied and engaged environment.
The Medical Director must adeptly navigate the unique challenges presented by the Arts Conservatory campus, which includes a diverse population of high school and college students, some as young as 11 years old during summer intensives. This requires experience in dealing with parents, understanding the specific health needs of athletes, and being willing to learn and adapt to the subculture of the arts. The Medical Director will also address the high demand for mental health services.
