Essentia Health is seeking a progressive, strategic and collaborative finance executive to serve as the health system’s next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Headquartered in Duluth, MN, Essentia Health is a $3 billion nonprofit integrated health system serving patients in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. The health system combines the strengths and talents of over 15,000 employees, including more than 2,300 physicians and advanced practitioners, who serve its patients and communities through the mission of being called to make a healthy difference in people’s lives.
The health system is comprised of 14 hospitals, 79 clinics, six long-term care facilities, six assisted living and independent living facilities, seven ambulance services, 27 retail pharmacies, and one research institute. Over the years, Essentia Health has had a long partnership with the University of Minnesota to train the next generation of physicians. Recently, the two organizations proposed the formation of a new nonprofit health care organization and framework to improve and enhance access for all Minnesotans, transform care delivery across the state, and re-invest in rural health care.
Reporting directly to the health system’s Chief Executive Officer, David Herman, M.D., the CFO is directly responsible for the financial operations of Essentia Health, including but not limited to finance, accounting, treasury, revenue cycle, managed care, and supply chain. The CFO is responsible for advising and supporting the CEO, senior leadership team, and Board of Directors on all matters pertaining to the health system’s financial position. The CFO must quickly become abreast of Essentia’s organizational strategy as well as the health system’s regional structure and market strategies to ensure the achievement of Essentia Health’s short and long-term financial and operational goals.
This executive will play a key role in operational excellence and performance improvement activities and look for ways to enhance overall efficiencies through benchmarking and standardization. They will ensure there is financial rigor and seamless coordination of business plans, pro forma development and all growth-related activities. With the upcoming go-live of Workday, the CFO will play a critical role alongside senior leadership in optimization activities. The CFO will be committed to growing the system’s income and balance statement as well as managing the investment portfolio to support Essentia Health’s long-term success.
