University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) seeks a dynamic technology leader to serve as its inaugural Director of Artificial Intelligence Initiatives (Director). This is a unique opportunity to provide the strategic and operational leadership for the Enhanced AI Center for Human Focused Research within a premier academic medical center that has been a destination of distinction in health education and research. The Director will work collaboratively with the University of Kansas Health System and the University of Kansas, in support of the OneKU initiative, to assist in delivering upon the vision to improve lives and communities in Kansas and beyond through partnership and innovation in education, research and health care.
Reporting to the Chief Research Informatics Officer, the Director will lead the Center, driving innovation and collaboration in AI research at KUMC, OneKU, and the KU Health System. The role will provide strategic leadership, support the securing of funding, and enable access to advanced computational and cloud infrastructure in support of research. Additionally, the Director will oversee a team responsible for computing infrastructure and strategic operations, ensuring the center’s capabilities scale with its growth.
The Director’s responsibilities will encompass both strategic leadership and operational oversight in support of AI initiatives. This includes integrating high-performance computing, cloud infrastructure, and interdisciplinary research under a cohesive vision. This role also emphasizes external collaboration and funding acquisition. By providing centralized leadership and resources for AI research, the Director will enhance collaboration across all five KU campuses, the KU Health System, and key partners. The Director will offer expert leadership on AI-related projects and streamline processes while maintaining high standards of ethics and security.
The Director will be a driven, innovative leader with demonstrated success in an academic and research organization, preferably a healthcare center. The ideal candidate will be a high functioning leader with strong communication skills who can create a future-facing technology environment that effectively supports the mission and goals of the Center. The Director will be a knowledgeable leader, with technical and business acumen, and a fundamental understanding of leveraging AI technology in a research environment. The Director will be a collaborative partner with high emotional intelligence who can engage others and build positive relationships. Key skill sets necessary to be successful in this role include an ability to engage stakeholders as a strategic partner and establish relationships with leaders and constituents across the enterprise.
