Executive Vice President / Chief Financial Officer
Mary Washington Healthcare
Fredericksburg, VA - United States
Mary Washington Healthcare, based in Fredericksburg, VA, seeks a collaborative, relational, growth-minded leader to serve as its next Executive Vice President / Chief Financial Officer (EVP / CFO). Reporting to the next CEO and President of Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC), Chris Newman, MD, MBA, who is ascending to the CEO from a combined COO/CMO role, this leader will have an outstanding opportunity to serve as a key member of a high-performing, cohesive senior leadership team in a results-driven healthcare system.
With approximately $1.2 billion in total operating revenues and more than 150 days of cash, the organization has a strong market position in a growing region and has historically realized positive operating results (in 2024, the organization realized an approximately seven percent margin). Mary Washington Healthcare is a regional, independent, not-for-profit community health system consisting of Mary Washington Hospital (MWH), Stafford Hospital (SH), Mary Washington Medical Group, Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, Stafford Hospital Foundation, Mary Washington Health Alliance, Mary Washington Hospice, MediCorp Properties, Inc. and joint ventures including Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg facilities and the Fredericksburg Ambulatory Surgery Center. The system also includes Mary Washington Hospital, Stafford Hospital, and Snowden at Fredericksburg, a separate 74-bed mental health hospital on the MWH campus. MWHC is a shareholder of Vizient. More than 47 medical specialties and 850+ area physicians and allied health professionals are represented on the medical staff. Mary Washington is investing substantially in its graduate medical education footprint – this leader will have a clear impact in advancing plans and strategies. Included within the $90-plus million 2025 capital budget is advancing a conference center, simulation lab and other components to advance MWHC’s strategic plans with advancing GME.
The CFO will be a member of the CEO’s senior cabinet and a trusted strategic advisor. They will be responsible for leading the enterprise’s financial operations, including finance, accounting, revenue cycle, debt management, and treasury. The next CFO will have a proven track record of leading growth-oriented, high-performing organizations. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience in financial leadership within complex, integrated health systems. The CFO will contribute broadly across Mary Washington Healthcare at all levels and will need to be equally comfortable working with the operating teams as presenting to the Board of Directors.
The strongest candidates will be excellent strategists with a track record of optimization of financial performance and systems and a flair for innovation. They will ensure a successful finance team is in place and develop talent internally. They will provide a balance between operational and strategic finance and will need to have the ability to function effectively in an independent, growing health system. The next CFO will bring decisive leadership to the finance function of the organization but remain a strong collaborator with other system leaders, finance leadership, the Board, and other stakeholders. This will be a highly visible leadership role in an environment where relationships are founded on mutual respect, transparency, humility, and accountability.
