Avera is a large rural health system serving South Dakota and surrounding areas, with a 644-bed tertiary hospital in Sioux Falls and five regional centers in SD and MN. Employing 22,100 people across 315 locations, including 37 hospitals and 200 clinics, Avera offers 60 medical specialties through 1,330 providers. Signature programs include oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, and more. As a Catholic ministry, Avera continues the legacy of the Benedictine and Presentation Sisters, emphasizing compassion, hospitality, and stewardship.
The System Vice President of Revenue Cycle, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), will manage revenue cycle operations across the enterprise, from scheduling to final bill adjudication for acute, ambulatory, at Home, Long Term Care, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and bad debt collections. This role is responsible for developing and communicating the strategic vision for the Revenue Cycle and setting goals with the leadership team to achieve organizational objectives. The position focuses on delivering financial results, meeting key performance metrics, and enhancing operational efficiency while ensuring a world-class patient experience. The System VP will also lead efforts to consolidate and coordinate operations, optimizing technological and staffing investments.
The successful System Vice President of Revenue Cycle candidate will:
- Develop and execute the vision and strategy defining Avera’s approach to revenue cycle operations, hardwiring accountability for revenue across the enterprise
- Be responsible for revenue cycle initiatives across the health system, both internally and externally, setting departmental budgets, attending executive meetings, sharing progress, barriers, and key decision points
- Lead overall strategy for continued revenue cycle consolidation across the enterprise, promoting best practice process improvements across cost and technology opportunities
- Champion change, continuously pushing team leaders to think creatively, solve complex challenges, and drive efforts to address barriers, ensuring efficiency in organizational design that leverage success from industry leaders
- Instill a culture of collaboration across all business lines, nurturing relationships with department leadership, encouraging adoption of best practices, leveraging industry and organizational knowledge to foresee risks and barriers
- Establish KPI performance targets for teams that will drive achievement of overall financial goals, shouldering accountability for meeting these targets and consistently communicating progress and risks to executive leadership
The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of extensive experience in revenue cycle functions within a complex health system, with a focus on continuous improvement, innovation, and automation. They will provide strategic direction for revenue cycle initiatives, monitor Key Performance Indicators and Service Level Agreements, and effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve goals.
