Western Michigan University (WMU), in partnership with WittKieffer, seeks an innovative, dynamic and experienced international education leader to serve as Associate Vice President for the Haenicke Institute for Global Education (AVP-HIGE)
WMU is a public research university located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, known for its strong commitment to student success and global engagement. The Haenicke Institute for Global Education serves as the hub for international activities at WMU, supporting over 1,170 international students and offering more than 80 study abroad programs. The Institute is dedicated to creating and sustaining an environment that facilitates global engagement for the WMU community.
Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the AVP-HIGE oversees the academic, programmatic, administrative, staff development, and fiscal leadership of the Haenicke Institute, while also leading initiatives to build international partnerships, enhance global learning opportunities, and support a diverse population of international students, scholars and alumni at WMU.
Key responsibilities for the Associate Vice President – HIGE include but are not limited to the following:
- Demonstrate strategic leadership and global engagement for the benefit and growth of Western Michigan University
- Develop a clear strategic plan for HIGE that aligns with WMU’s overall goals and communicate this vision to all stakeholders.
- Promote campus and community internationalization through advancing global engagement opportunities fostered through internal and external partnerships.
- Partner with campus stakeholders to enhance international student recruitment and retention.
- Effectively lead the Haenicke Institute’s staff and promote professional development and growth.
WMU is a public research university located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, known for its strong commitment to student success and global engagement. The Haenicke Institute for Global Education serves as the hub for international activities at WMU, supporting over 1,170 international students and offering more than 80 study abroad programs. The Institute is dedicated to creating and sustaining an environment that facilitates global engagement for the WMU community. Throughout the year, it hosts various global learning events, including lectures, panel discussions, and cultural showcases, to promote scholarship and academic opportunities. The institute is comprised of professional staff and faculty led by the Associate Vice President HIGE’s units include CELCIS (intensive English program), Fulbright support, immigration services, international admissions and services, international student activities, and study abroad. In addition, HIGE hosts the Michitoshi Soga Japan Center, and the Timothy Light Center for Chinese Studies, and a variety of events through the Global Engagement Program, Asian Initiatives and External Scholarships and Faculty Development Program, to encourage a more globally engaged Southwest Michigan.
The ideal candidate will possess strong, demonstrated experience building a thriving international student body, developing global partnerships, and contributing to international student success, while managing a complex budget, leading an exceptional team of professionals and forming collaborative relationships in an atmosphere of shared governance.
An earned graduate degree from an accredited college/university with at least five (5) years of experience in a supervisory role is required. A doctoral or terminal degree with eight (8) years of work experience is preferred, in a college or university setting, along with a deep understanding of international student support, with excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
