Sutter Health seeks a leader to serve as its inaugural Vice President, Chief AI Officer (CAIO). This is a unique and exceptional opportunity to lead and implement artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) initiatives at one of the largest, not-for-profit integrated delivery health systems in the U.S. totaling more than $16 billion in annual revenues. The CAIO will contribute broadly to support the health system’s strategic priorities focused on delivering healthcare that is safe, personal, affordable and accessible.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer, the CAIO will lead the data science and AI program at Sutter Health, creating value through AI/ML technologies. This includes designing, owning, and implementing Sutter Health’s data science and AI strategy and building the data science and AI roadmap.
This role will provide collaborative prioritization of data science and AI/ML initiatives and align data science and AI/ML strategy with Sutter’s leadership vision and provide expertise for cross-functional initiatives. The role will establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across the organization while ensuring clinical value and ROI of successful deployment of algorithms and data products. The CAIO will collaborate closely with the Chief Health Information Officer, the Chief Innovation Officer, physician informaticists, chiefs of staff, and operations and service line leaders to evaluate, tune and implement data science and AI/ML solutions. In addition, the role will be instrumental in leveraging AI/ML techniques and deep knowledge of the Epic EHR to support clinical best practice.
The CAIO will build and lead Sutter’s growing team of data scientists, leveraging their experience to accelerate development and adoption of high-value and meaningful healthcare AI/ML solutions. The CAIO will enable the data science and AI/ML team to draw new and unique observations through causal inference and machine learning. The role will be instrumental in enhancing the efficacy and value of clinical care, and deriving insights for Sutter’s patients, providers, and leadership.
The CAIO must be a driven, engaged leader with a practical approach to develop and deliver on a vision for AI/ML enabled transformation working in a large and complex organization. The CAIO will have deep knowledge and a proven track record of successfully implementing AI/ML solutions that dramatically improve operational efficiency and the overall user experience. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead change effectively are essential. The CAIO will be a visible professional with high emotional intelligence and a team-oriented approach. They will be a visible leader who can lead change effectively and deliver results in an evolving health system.
