UC Davis School of Medicine seeks an accomplished and collaborative academic leader to serve as the next Chair of Emergency Medicine. This is an exceptional opportunity to build across all three missions of one of the nation’s top academic emergency medicine departments. The Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine will also be the holder of the Bo Tomas Brofeldt Endowed Chair.
The School of Medicine is among the nation’s leading medical schools, consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report for this excellence. The Institution excels in scientific discovery, with a research-funding portfolio of over 1,300 active awards with more than $400 million in extramural funding. As the clinical engine, UC Davis Health is a multibillion-dollar health system within the University of California System, which includes the 646-bed academic medical center, 32 ambulatory sites, a 1,000-member medical group, and an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Department of Emergency Medicine has a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, residents, and affiliated specialists who deliver care across the lifespan, including providing Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma care for more than 33 of California’s 58 counties. The department is home to 70 faculty and more than 200 volunteer clinical faculty at affiliate hospitals. The faculty offer comprehensive training to residents, fellows, and medical students and is ranked in the top 20 nationally for NIH funding among all academic departments of emergency medicine. In 2023, the department received $15.2M in extramural funding for research.
The next Chair will be a nationally recognized academic physician with the ability to continue the department’s growth and trajectory as a regional, national, and international leader in medical education, research, and patient care and service. The successful candidate will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to recruit, promote the growth of others, inspire, manage, and collaborate. This leader will set forth uncompromising standards of professionalism and an ability to take a larger institutional view, which is integral to the department’s and the health system’s success. Candidates must possess an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent degree and board certification in Emergency Medicine and warrant qualification for appointment to Associate Professor or Professor at the School of Medicine.

The salary range for this position is $600,000-$800,000. This position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation plan.
