Ballad Health is seeking a transformative, strategic, and relational leader for the inaugural role of Vice President & CEO, Oncology Services (VP/CEO) to drive the evolution of cancer care across the system. Serving 29 counties across Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Northwest North Carolina, and Southeast Kentucky, Ballad Health is a comprehensive community health improvement organization formed in 2018 through the merger of two regional health systems. With 21 hospitals, post-acute care and behavioral health services, and a large multi-specialty physician practice, Ballad Health is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of nearly one million people.
Reporting to the SVP, Regional Operations and Service Line Development, Brad Price, the VP/CEO will play a pivotal role in advancing Ballad Health’s strategic focus on cancer services. The VP/CEO will aim to establish the organization as the region’s preferred choice for cancer care. The VP/CEO will work collaboratively with facility leaders for the coordination of oncology services and assure smooth patient flow.
Ballad Health’s cancer services, provided at locations including Bristol Regional Medical Center, Holston Valley Medical Center, Johnson City Medical Center, Johnston Memorial Hospital, Smyth County, Russell County and Greeneville Community Hospital, meet rigorous standards and are accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. The cancer teams utilize advanced technologies such as robotic-assisted surgery, TrueBeam STx™ with Brainlab, and Trilogy® linear accelerators.
The VP/CEO will bring executive-level thinking and a strategic mindset to the role, collaborating with key stakeholders to develop and execute a cohesive vision and plan for oncology services. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a proven ability to grow programs and build strong relationships with clinical partners. This individual will serve as the voice and face of Ballad Health’s oncology services, managing complex relationships and stakeholder interactions effectively.
Additionally, the VP/CEO will further develop the Oncology Service Line’s partnership with East Tennessee State University (ETSU), contribute to marketing strategies, and coordinate efforts with both private and employed physician groups. The role involves working with market leadership and steering committees to ensure effective coordination across the service line, recommending and tracking performance metrics related to quality, patient satisfaction, and financial performance. Oversight of various corporate service line programs including navigation, will also be part of the role.
Ideal candidates will be performance-oriented, operationally adept, and innovative leaders with a strong track record of enhancing performance in highly matrixed health system environments. They should have at least five years of senior leadership experience and successful achievement in competitive and growing markets. A history of successfully managing an oncology service line in a complex organization is required. This highly visible role requires a relational and servant leadership mindset, with a foundation of mutual respect, transparency, humility, collaboration and accountability.
