Executive Vice Dean for Administration
Duke University School of Medicine
Durham, NC - United States
Duke University School of Medicine, one of the world’s premier academic health institutions, seeks a collaborative and strategic leader to serve as the next Executive Vice Dean for Administration (EVDA). This is a critical moment of change with the planned retirement of the current EVDA after 25 years of service to Duke. The EVDA is the Executive Vice President/Dean’s lead administrator for the School of Medicine, responsible for the effective and efficient provision of central administrative services to the faculty and staff of the School of Medicine in the furtherance of the academic mission. The EVDA will have the opportunity to help shape the future structure and direction of the School as it seeks to grow biomedical and educational programs strategically while ensuring effective connectivity and coordination across Duke Health and Duke University.
The School of Medicine incorporates a range of highly regarded, nationally acclaimed health education, biomedical graduate, and certificate and training programs. The School also includes the research efforts of more than 2,600 basic and clinical faculty in 40 departments, centers, institutes, and initiatives and represents the largest research component across the University. Their combined efforts make Duke one of the largest biomedical research enterprises in the country with $1 billion in sponsored research expenditures annually.
The EVDA advises the EVP/Dean on strategic initiatives, financial and space planning, operational efficiency, and matters involving legal and risk management. This position serves as both an operational leader, an advisor to other Vice Deans, and a liaison between the Dean’s Office, the University central administrative areas, and the Duke University Health System.
As a member of the Executive Vice President/Dean’s senior leadership team, the EDVA has direct responsibility for Finance, Human Resources, Space Management/Renovation, and Capital Planning at the School of Medicine. Additionally, they work in partnership with the Duke Health Integrated Practice Chief Operating Officer to share oversight of the Duke Health Integrated Practice/School of Medicine compensation director. Other areas that fall under the general oversight of the EVDA include Research administration, including central shared services, Medical Education and Basic Science administration, including a newly formed administrative hub for Research administration and Human Resources. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are woven into the culture across the School and as a key leader, the EVDA ensures the continued focus on this priority and the well-being of all faculty and staff.
This position requires at least 10 years of administrative and financial leadership experience in a complex academic research environment, preferably in a world-class academic medical center. Additionally, candidates must have more than five years of experience managing either facilities planning, human resources, research administration, or medical education administration in addition to financial management.
