Executive Assistant Dean, Touro Dental Health Albuquerque
Touro University
New York, NY - United States
New York-based Touro University and its College of Dental Medicine seeks an enterprising, collaborative dental leader who is licensable in the State of New Mexico to serve as the inaugural Executive Assistant Dean at Touro Dental Health Albuquerque, based in New Mexico. The Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) is driven to address the national shortage of dentists in general, but specifically in the state of New Mexico, and aims to provide dental services to underserved communities in New Mexico. As such, the school is opening a new clinic and educational facility in Albuquerque to provide dental education to students and dental services to the local community.
In March 2023, TCDM received approval from the Commission on Dental Accreditation to increase its enrollment by 100 students, bringing its individual class size to a total number of students to 210. TCDM is becoming one of the largest dental schools in the country. Students will study at TCDM’s Valhalla, NY campus during the first two years, focusing on biomedical foundations and dental skills simulation. In their final two years, 220 students will continue their clinical studies in New York, while 200 students will complete their clinical studies at the new location in New Mexico. The new campus is scheduled to welcome its first class of students in June of 2025.
The new educational facility will be a game-changer for New Mexico, a state without a dental school. It will not only provide dental care to underserved communities but also offer local students the opportunity to pursue dental careers. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the state’s dental resources, addressing New Mexico’s low dentist-to-population ratio, one of the lowest in the country. TCDM’s increased enrollment and the new facility in New Mexico hopes to assist in retaining more graduating dentists within the state, a crucial step in addressing this significant disparity. The expanded class will be welcomed to New Mexico in June 2025 as the Class of 2027, marking TCDM’s eighth graduating class.
The inaugural Executive Assistant Dean (EAD) will be a key player in shaping the educational and clinical landscape for the new facility. This role will involve overseeing the establishment and operation of the new clinical educational facility, ensuring it meets the highest standards of dental education and patient care. The EAD will recruit and mentor faculty and staff, develop a world-class clinical operation, and foster a collaborative environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, and service. They will also work closely with leaders in New York to ensure consistency and alignment across the campuses.
Moreover, the inaugural leader will be tasked with building partnerships with local institutions, securing funding and resources, and advocating for the dental school’s mission across the state. They will also implement strategic initiatives to attract students from New Mexico and retain graduates within New Mexico to address the state’s dental workforce shortages. By creating a supportive and dynamic educational environment, the EAD will help ensure that the new facility produces competent and compassionate dentists and becomes a center of innovation and community engagement.
To be successful, the Executive Assistant Dean must possess strong leadership and management skills, with a proven track record in academic administration, dental education and clinical operations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for building relationships with faculty, students, staff, community leaders, and stakeholders. The leader should also deeply understand the challenges facing dental education and healthcare delivery in underserved areas, with a commitment to addressing disparities in access to dental care. Additionally, securing funding and managing financial resources effectively will be essential to support the facility’s growth and sustainability. A visionary mindset and practical problem-solving abilities will enable this individual to drive innovation and ensure the facility’s success in its mission to improve dental health in New Mexico.
