Job Description

Ball State University seeks an experienced and inspiring academic and administrative leader to serve as its next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

Ball State’s seven academic colleges offer more than 190 undergraduate majors, 130 minors and 140 master’s, doctoral, certificate and specialist degrees. More than 3,300 faculty members deliver world-class instruction, pursue cutting-edge research and creative endeavors and provide exemplary service in the Colleges of Architecture and Planning; Communication, Information and Media; Fine Arts; Health (launched in 2016); Sciences and Humanities; Business; and in the Teachers College. The university enrolls more than 22,000 students on and off campus, including more than 5,500 graduate students, and has an operating budget of $355 million.

The next provost will be a key partner to President Geoffrey Mearns, who took office in May, 2017. In collaboration with fellow university leaders, deans and faculty, the incoming provost will create a shared academic vision and develop, implement and execute a strategic plan. As part of this process, the provost will help implement a new, more decentralized budgeting model that aligns resources with strategic priorities. The provost will have the opportunity to build a robust academic leadership team, facilitate the completion of a new health professions building and play a significant role in fostering a culture of honesty, transparency and inclusion across the university community.

The ideal candidate will be an engaged, inspiring leader with a demonstrated commitment to Ball State’s heritage, mission and core values. The provost will advance those values by building on the university’s traditions and strengths, actively seeking consensus among all its constituencies, and exercising superb management and decision-making skills. The provost will communicate effectively with both internal and external constituencies, articulating clearly and passionately Ball State’s mission and strategic aspirations. She or he will work effectively with the president in pursuit of strategic initiatives that will further strengthen the university and the community. The provost will embrace the faculty’s commitment to excellence in teaching, underscored by quality scholarship and research, and understand the connections between the two. The provost will strengthen and foster a vibrant and diverse community of students, faculty and staff, enhancing relationships with alumni, parents, community leaders, elected officials and others closely associated with the university. Finally, the provost will lead by modeling character, passion, integrity and the pursuit of knowledge. An earned terminal degree and demonstrated success in higher education administration are required.
