WellSpan Health - President and CEO

York, PA

Job Description

WellSpan Health, a $2.5 billion community health system located in Central Pennsylvania, is seeking a visionary and inspirational President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead one of the region’s most comprehensive health systems. This opportunity is available due to the planned retirement of the current CEO, Kevin Mosser, MD, who is retiring at the end of 2018 after more than 30 years of service. Kevin has served as WellSpan’s President and CEO since 2013.

Committed to improving and enhancing the overall health and well-being of the communities it serves, WellSpan Health is an integrated health system that serves the communities of Central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. The organization is comprised of a multispecialty medical group of physicians and advanced practice clinicians, a regional behavioral health organization, a home care organization, six respected hospitals, more than 15,000 employees, and more than 140 patient care locations.

WellSpan Health enjoys a strong reputation nationally as a high-performing, community-focused, stable health system. Among the hallmarks of WellSpan Health is a collaborative organizational culture where leaders have a deep sense of mutual support and trust and advancing a mission of service. WellSpan Health’s culture is one that emphasizes evidence-based, inclusive approaches to planning, a deep focus on serving its communities and doing the right thing. The organizational culture is one that places value on leaders who consistently demonstrate transparency, humility, respect, personal integrity and visibility. The next CEO will be expected to continue the preservation of these core cultural characteristics while also helping the culture and organization adapt to the changing landscape.

The next CEO will be joining WellSpan Health at an exciting time. WellSpan has realized significant advancements in recent years; this includes a transformation to EPIC, several new partnerships and affiliations, including a recent announcement that the boards of WellSpan Health and Summit Health have signed a memorandum of understanding to affiliate. The CEO will work collaboratively with the WellSpan Board and senior executive team to develop a vision and strategy that translates the trends and market dynamics into meaningful goals that will position WellSpan Health for success in the future.  With increasing competition within the regional market, the CEO will need to assess opportunities, threats and identify creative approaches to partnerships.  Most fundamentally, the CEO is responsible for developing, implementing and fulfilling the strategic goals and objectives of WellSpan Health and advancing the achievement of the organization’s mission.

The Board seeks candidates who bring experience leading and preparing a growing complex system in a time of transformational change in the delivery and financing of healthcare. Anticipating and adapting to new financial models will be a critical factor for future success, as will be identifying new innovative models of managing the health of the population and strengthening consumer loyalty.  This next CEO will carry on the rich tradition and history that serves as a solid foundation for WellSpan Health, while also identifying innovations and initiatives that prepare for the future. The successful candidate will be a seasoned leader with experience at the senior executive level in a high performing organization who demonstrates a strong and successful track record in strategic planning, operational alignment and leadership team selection and development.  The CEO will be a values-driven leader who inspires others with strong emotional and social intelligence and a demonstrated ability to connect with individuals in an authentic, meaningful way at all levels of an organization. This is an exciting opportunity to join an organization that truly lives its mission of serving its communities and is committed to an open, respectful and highly collaborative working environment.
