Anne Arundel Medical Center - Chair of Medicine

Annapolis, MD

Job Description

Witt/Kieffer has been retained by Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) to assist in their national search for an innovative and strategic physician leader to assume the position of Chair of Medicine to lead the Department of Medicine across this complex and thriving health system.

AAMC consistently receives awards for quality, patient satisfaction and innovation. With a 374-licensed bed medical center, over 1,000 medical staff members and 4,000 employees, AAMC includes a not-for-profit hospital, a medical group and an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). Additionally, AAMC includes a mental health and substance abuse treatment center, a research institute, as well as other various community health enterprises. In addition to a 57-Acre Annapolis campus, AAMC has multiple outpatient pavilions throughout the community. Combined with its strong reputation, AAMC possesses a strong balance sheet and net revenues of more than $630 million. AAMC has a ten year affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM).  This relationship includes efforts in population health, research and education. The candidate, with appropriate academic success, will have the opportunity to apply for an academic appointment at JHM.

Reporting directly to the system Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Chair will serve as a key clinical leader and member of the senior executive committee within the organization. The Chair will support the CMO, other Chairs and Medical Directors in a matrix organization, in their efforts to achieve those strategic initiatives which are defined as critical to a thriving health system. This would include, but not limited to a framework of strategic and operational transitions related to population health and other value-based shifts occurring within the industry which focus on increased quality of care and cost reduction, enhanced patient experience and satisfaction metrics, pragmatic approach to fiscal decision making, while navigating the capitation model that exists within the state of Maryland, as well as developing a more clinically integrated system with local community physicians.

One additional major key element of success will be the health system’s transition from being an excellent regional health system to become a comprehensive teaching hospital. The development and initiation of an internal medicine residency program is one key part of a system wide effort to evolve into a comprehensive teaching environment.

With oversight of two Associate Chair positions within the department, the key responsibilities of the Chair of Medicine is to ensure that the department functions in an integrated system of care, improve performance while realizing robust growth in breadth and depth of clinical programs, as well as enhance quality outcomes. Internal medicine research activities and teaching are expected to be designed and implemented. A genuine effort to mentor, guide and support a broad group of physician leaders within the department is a critical expectation of the Chair role.

We seek a strategic and progressive master clinician, and educator who will place a particular emphasis on ushering the department into a value based system, integrating the faculty and aligning community physicians, growing the department’s clinical services and establishing the foundation for an internal medicine residency program.
