The American University of Sharjah (AUS) opened in 1997. It has achieved remarkable enrollment growth and academic distinction during its short history. AUS now has approximately 6,000 students representing more than 90 nationalities, 376 full-time faculty, and 500 full-time staff. The University’s Chancellor, Dr. Björn Kjerfve, seeks a provost who will play a key role in continuing the university’s trajectory toward excellence in education, research, and scholarship and expand its reputation as the university of choice in the region for students and faculty from across the globe. As the Chief Academic Officer of the University reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Provost provides vision, leadership, and operational direction for the Deans and Directors of the academic support services. In so doing, the Provost ensures that the University’s curriculum and programs of research and service continuously strive to improve in quality and content, consistent with the overall mission and strategic goals of the institution.
The Provost directs the operations of the Academic Affairs division and oversees the following organizational units and their sub-units: Office of the Provost; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Architecture, Art and Design; School of Business Administration; College of Engineering; the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and Instruction; the Office of Student Affairs; the Library; the Office of Financial Grants and Scholarships; the International Exchange Office; the Office of Enrollment Management; the Registrar’s Office, the Manager of Accreditation, and the Office of Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies.
The Provost must possess a terminal degree in one of the disciplines represented at the University and have a demonstrated record of successful higher education teaching, mentoring, research and scholarship; proven academic leadership success; and ability to build trust, operate transparently, and negotiate confidently in a multi-cultural environment.
